Any suggestions as to what's happening with this rabbit's eye. It presented to me 3 days ago, sudden onset, being looked after by a neighbour while owner away, neighbour doesn't know if the rabbit is registered with a vet, so no access to

Re: Rabbit eye lesion

[quote user="Bill Manton"]

The eye looks to have a major hyphaema (intra-ocular bleed) with associated corneal opacities but I can't see enough detail to say much more. Differentials would include blunt trauma, coagulopathy, and any cause of peracute uveitis. E cuniculi can't be ruled out, but if the other eye is completely normal I would be much more suspicious of trauma. Unfortunately I would be surprised if this eye does not eventually require enucleation as that amount of blood in an eye will commonly lead to intractable secondary glaucoma. Ideally the IOP should be measured so that if glaucoma is already present treatment can be attempted. I would also suggest treatment for uveitis (which will be present either as the cause of the bleeding, or secondary to the presence of blood) with topical Pred-forte or maxitrol drops 4 x daily in addition to the metacam.

Good luck

Thank you for your reply, the neighbours who are looking after the rabbit are unable to medicate it, but the owners are back in 2 days, so I will get them to bring the rabbit in to discuss further investigation/treatment when they get back.

Re: Rabbit eye lesion

The eye looks to have a major hyphaema (intra-ocular bleed) with associated corneal opacities but I can't see enough detail to say much more.
