4 year old female entire collie presented yesterday with thinning hair over lumbar region, rest of hair coat poor quality and on further examination, thin hair over the chest too. Non-pruritic. Skin condition - mild scurf

Re: Alopecia and silent seasons

[quote user="Busybee"]

The owner is a bit hard to get information out of and also reluctant to spend too much on tests (could go all out and go skin scrapes/hair plucks/biopsies/ACTH stim/oestrogen/progesterone.....etc!).

You've got it in a nutshell, anything else is a shot in the dark, don't waste too much mental energy on it if the owner isn't playing ball with you, assume its just seasonal allopecia - does that exist or is just a good excuse for not doing a proper work-up?

Re: Alopecia and silent seasons

I certainly thought of SFA but it's very much dorsum and chest, not really flank alopecia meeting dorsally. I will speak to them tomorrow and try and persuade them to investigate a bit further but wanted to know if anyone had come across anything similar?

Re: Alopecia and silent seasons

Could be hormonal, I guess if they don't want to spend much money then neuter it and see if it gets better.

Could just be seasonal flank alopecia in which case will probably happen every year.
