My experience of flunixin is that it lasts even less than that however. For pain relief I still prefer to use metacam. If your wanting to reduce temperature then yes flunixin is great but I certainly don't rate it as a analgesic.

Definately agree with you on the use of fluoroquinolones first line though. Hexasol is a good product mainly for it's price vs some of the alternatives such as draxxin or resflor. Having said that I've never had much success with draxxin in goats. Maybe just the wrong infections.

Should we be using marbocyl i.e. a fluoroquinolone as a 1st line treatment for respiratory disease? I'd say not.

Hexasol LA (oxytet + flunixin) is a great product - v little resistance in goats - oxytet component lasts for 5 days plus you get flunixin, by far and away the most potent anti-pyretic in ruminants. Far, far cheaper than marbocyl too.

Resflor is an alternative (nuflor + flunixin). Nuflor/resflor s/c longer course (4-5d) of action than IM(2d). As above, draxxin for a 'jab and forget' alternative (10/11ds).

Thanks for the suggestions. The goat seems to be doing ok now. A colleague gave it another dose of metacam on friday and said it seemed much better compared to Monday so fingers crossed it'll be ok. I'll try marbocyl in the next one.

Avoid micotil in goats! It can be fatal apparently. I've usually found oxytet + metacam works fairly well for most cases and baytril/marbocyl for the severe cases.

IIRC the Nuflor Mini Dose only licensed for single injection. I'm not sure 4 or 5 days is a sufficiently long course for pneumonia and I have had cases relapse with short courses (in other species than goats, never used that drug in a goat). DOA of the main reasons I use Draxxin as 1st line.

I'm no goat expert but have used Marbocyl daily to good effect in similar circumstances to those you describe. Just be aware that goat kids seem rather delicate and are quite good at dying - don't beat yourself up if things go wrong. Lambs and calves seem a lot more robust.
