Started spotting 6 days ago, but the owners were worried re volume of blood lost, as she seems to leave a small puddle behind whenever she sits for a period of time.

I am still of the times when most bitches got in heat and few were spayed. It sounds completely normal to me, some bitches can bleed a lot, very inconvenient! Can also become very temperamental or lethargic. Pyo seems improbable in a bitch that young, and yes, if it is all too much for the owner I would spay, not on a saturday night but as a normal bitch spay.

Good luck! Mariette

Agree absolutely - this looks an entirely normal situation.

My general sentiments, although I'm not sure these days that the art of masterly inactivity adequately placates the cascade, VDS or dear old Boiled Cabbage.

This bitch is currently in heat which means things might be very different. I have a colleague who used it in a bitch that had rather bloody than mucous discharge, this one started to bleed and never stopped until it was put down (Surgery no option in this case). The bleeding just got stronger from day to day, it was a Rottweiler and there was certainly a lot of blood coming out of this dog... So as a word of warning I would suggest talking to the manufacturer first before treating with Aglepristone in this case.

My approach would be antibiotics and close monitoring and then spay after heat as I would expect problems during the next heat again.

Re: To suppress or not to suppress?

There was a lovely article in the last vet times about aglepristone, 2 mismating doses 24 hrs apart if it's a pyo apparently fixes it.
