I am looking for new clipper for dogs and cats. I would like to have your opinion. What is difference between Oster Powermax™ Clipper 2 Speed and Oster Golden A5® Two Speed Clipper . What do you prefer to have in your practice?
Cheers.

Re: about clippers
I have noticed that the occasional set of blades can rattle a bit increasing noise
This happens with Osters too. It is usually the blade retension lug which widens for some reson allowing the head to vibrate in its tongue.

I assume you mean the actual head ie both blades vibrate from side to side?

Closing slightly the raised sides with dental forceps or pliers fixes it.

Re: about clippers
Dear Ruta,

We sell both models with varying degrees of satisfaction from our clients, historically veterinary surgeries purchased the Oster clipper single speed as this product is used in most veterinary colleges/universities, therefore, it is an item that the practitioner is comfortable with.

The Andis AGR is now becoming a popular product for the reasons described in the previous posts, as a repair centre for both of these products the Andis does not need repairing as often as the Oster.

As regards to the 2 speed clippers I have only known surgeries to use the fast speed setting on these models as animals become fretful when awaiting for their carer to flick between slow and fast speed settings.

Therefore I recommend that your purchase is the Andis but just the single speed will be more than suitable for your needs. With a recomendation that you look at a Moser Arco as a quiet clipper for finding a vein on Felines, this clipper has also been recommended by vets that TB test fields of cows as they are easier on the fingers than a pair of scissors.

I hope that this helps. Further information is available on request.

I agree that the Andis clippers are more pleasant to use. I have noticed that the occasional set of blades can rattle a bit increasing noise. We have the twin speed and find that the higher speed seems better for finer hair. On a pedantic note can you explain what " Felines" are, cats or all members of Felidae which someone told me should really be called "Felids". It's the same for equines, bovines etc. What is the correct word for each? Just asking in fun! We ordered two recently and one arrived with a broken filter new out the box, the second broke after a few uses. The first one was sent back and was returned several weeks later then both filters broke again after a few uses. Result: I've given up on warranty repairs and accepted this is just a design fault, all filters are now stuck on with gaffer tape which is much stronger than the original clips. Other than that very reliable and run for ever.

Re: about clippers
My advice (in a very long winded, about the houses way)
is to look at the rechargeable cheapos on ebay etc. They are smaller, lighter quieter and cheaper so don't sound like a combine harvester and freak the animals so much when you clip for an I/V ,also if you drop them it's not a massive bill for the rebody.

And they're more likely to be put back on the charger and not left on the table to be knocked off........

No good for dematting a cat though.

Re: about clippers

Hello, Michael,

Thank you for advice.

P.S. My diabetic dog is fine. There is no ketones in urine, she is bright and no pu/pd. I am planning to spay her next Monday. I hope everything will be ok. Thanks for asking. :)

The A5 is very simple and you can get anything as a spare part, if you can solder you can mend them yourself. Follow the instructions and grease them through the nipple on the neck.

We have 2 pairs of the A5 single speed and 1 set of the 2 speed. We never use the slow speed and the 'off' position is in the middle of the rocker switch so what I do (and I may be a particular idiot) is the start on the daft low speed, swap to the fast speed and then when I want to turn them off go back to low speed. By the time you get near the cat with the needle for it's blood sample it is thoroughly pissed off.

My advice (in a very long winded, about the houses way) is buy neither pair you link. Find the cheaper A5 single speed and with the money you save buy an extra number 40 blade!

(how are you getting on with your diabetic?)
