Whilst the consensus is to avoid Delvo these days, with my own bitches, which invariably have had at least one litter when young, I've seldom spayed, but used Delvo to stop seasons. Never had a pyo; keeps coat in good condition; avoids false pregnancy issues and assists in weight control compared with spaying. As an owner, I'm v pleased with it even if its at odds with my usual line in the consulting room!

Re: Cure for grumpiness

Well I spoke to the owner today and apparently she's not been spayed. So hormonal issues could be a problem. She's not showing any signs of a pyo and has normal seasons. She doesn't want to spay her at the moment. I suggested a blood sample to check thyroid function but she's happy that the dog seems better at the moment even though the kitten has now gone. Maybe she was just grumpy because she was uncomfortable. So she doesn't want to do anything more unless the dog starts having problems again.

So I'll let you know what the outcome is if/when she comes back in.

Re: Cure for grumpiness

I hate it when clients do that - wife who knows all about the dog/cat and its problems sends husband in who knows the animals name and thats about it. Result: no history.

Re: Cure for grumpiness

Thanks. I'm pretty sure she has been spayed. I spoke to the guy and he said he didn't think she had seasons but his wife deals with the dog so he would check with her. I would have thought that if you live in the same house you would know if the dog is having seasons or not, but you never know with some clients. I'll try to speak to her when I'm back at work tomorrow and I'll suggest checking the thyroid.

Re: Cure for grumpiness

I agree with the previous poster in recommending you check thyroid function, but it would also be worth requesting thyroglobulin autoantibodies as behavioural changes can be associated with autoimmune thyroiditis which may precede clinical hypothyroidism.

Re: Cure for grumpiness

Dunno, he might be more of a lager man! :p

Re: Cure for grumpiness

[quote user="Anthony Todd"]

When I was a child we had a rabbit that lived with a guinea pig*. After a couple of years the guinea pig died. Bunny not eating, loosing weight and depressed. By this point I had lost interest in this particular creature but we went to the pet shop and bought a new guinea pig - bunny was fine. Same thing happened when 2nd guinea pig died - had to buy 3 new pets for the rabbit in the end!
