The animal had been on Baytril but had not been seen to be responding. I haven't seen the animal as yet but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions etc on this?
Here is my problem with convenia.

Its duration of action is based on the fact that it is bound to dog and cat plasma proteins. Other species (not having these proteins) have variation in the cevovecin 1/2 life. There is no reliability and the drug has been postulated to be out of some species within 1/2 hour! So please do not extrapolate convenia into exotics, its a shame but its efficacy is more than questionable

I was told recently by a pfizer rep that it is excreted from rabbits within 24hrs.

Re: Mongoose pneumonia

Here is my problem with convenia.

What dose of antibiotic are you onn, I would also add a nsaid (melox at 0.2-0.3mgs/kg sid)

Examined the animal for the first time today and lungs weren't as bad as I'd expected. There certainly is a slightly increased resp rate and effort compared with the other animals in the group. I'd agree that culture may well be unrewarding but I've taken a swab of discharge anyway.

Re: Mongoose pneumonia

Hi, Rads are always a good idea in these cases to assess the lungs but also heart size. Culture may be unrewarding if the animal has been on antibiotics (do you know the dose). If you can use the anaesthetic to give you opportunity to take blood, thats something I would also do. These cases require agressive treatment as well as investigation of an underlying cause. Post the rads if you like. If there is a pneumonia, then hospitilisation, nsaids and nebulisation will also help

Goodluck, Mark
