Thanks for your advice. Ironically, the owner has started adding some sort of 'clay' based additive to the feed (so she tells me!) that apparently has cured the problem.....!

But I'd definitely be interested in the topical application recipe if you wouldn't mind passing this on? I'll definitely keep your advice on the back-burner if this horse, or any other, develops a similar problem again!

I work in Essex in the UK and recently we have seen a rise in Pinworm infections. They all seem to be on well kept horses that are regularly wormed with moxidectin dosed to bodyweight. I have to say the main reason we are called is pruritis and obviously the main Ddx is Sweet Itch. We normally diagnose them by using tape strips around the anus, when these are viewed down a microscope the eggs are quite obvious, sort of oblong with a circular area at each end (rubbish description but I'm sure you could find a picture on the net somewhere!). There is an anecdotal, unpublished, treatment regime of using up to 4x the usual dose of ivermectin - the idea being that the pinworms live in the anus and need very high quantities of anthelmintic to reach them here. This is combined with daily painting on topical ivermectin (such as ivomec) mixed with an oily base such as propylene glycol (I cannot remember the exact quantities but can look it up if your interested) around the anus and back end. I have to say I've always been worried about the amount of ivermectin suggested but tend to go for a generous dose (approx. double dose) and find the topical tx is very effective at stopping the itching. Hope this helps, let me know if you want the topical quantities recipe!

Really safe, just make sure owner gives plenty for the full 5 days. Safe as houses so I always get them to round the horses weight up.If it's a 'big' horse then I usually get them to split the bottle over the 5 days, which treats them for just under 600KG IIRC).

I would have thought Moxidectin would have killed them?
