- Monthly Milbemax to prevent GIT parasites and heartworm.

- Scalibor collars to prevent leishmania transmission by sandflies, heartworm transmission by mosquitoes, and ehrlichia/babesia transmission by ticks.

- Monthly Frontline Combo to prevent fleas, ticks, lice as normal.

It's quite a "belt and braces" approach but it works for us - unfortunately, there is no one product that will prevent against all ectoparasites so multiple products will be required.

It is worth taking caution prior to starting monthly Milbemax for heartworm prevention in case of the possibility that the animal has ever been exposed to heartworm previously. Use of monthly Milbemax in animals that could be infected with heartworm, even if they are not showing any clinical signs at the time, will result in the mass death of larvae and a subsequent hypersensitivity reaction. If the animal has only ever been in the UK, it is probably safe to assume that this is not a problem, but if it has holidayed outside of the UK at anytime, a simple snap test may be worth doing prior to starting Milbemax.

Re: Preventative medications for travelling abroad

Scalibor/Advantix and Milbemax

Re: Preventative medications for travelling abroad

I spoke to the Bayer rep about this last week they were very helpful re dose frequencies, using different products together etc.

Thanks for that. What about heartworm? Is monthly stronghold sufficient, and if so how long do you need to continue after return to the UK?

The Scalibor collar protects against mosquitoes, sand flies and ticks. So you are covered for heartworm
