You do raise a good point regarding dogs though. A few years ago I had the mis fortune of having to boil out a dog's carcass in order to mount the skeleton for an anatomy project. It smelt delicious and I felt a little bit dirty. No I wasn't tempted but I could have been if not for the barbiturates.

Re: Rabbit spays
If you want to have a humour section then please feel free to put one up so people can joke to their hearts content.
Absolutely not. I would no more do that than introduce a new rule in my company that staff may only make jokes during joke time, between 10:00am and 10:15am in the morning.

Seriously, I think laughing is one of the most important aspects of life that there is. The world would be a very much better place if more people did more of it.
We live in times where we are more and more scrutinised.
You're right. I deplore the effect this has on people's ability to have a laugh. In this politically correct, increasingly scrutinised world we live in, people seem almost ashamed to have a laugh about so many things. 'I was joking' should be a badge of honour, not a mark of shame.
If I had genuine concerns and wanted to post a question, I would feel belittled by the comments that have been put and may not post again.
I didn't think the posts belittled the original poster in the slightest. If I did, I would have intervened immediately, as that would be completely at odds with what these forums are supposed to be all about.
Would vetsurgeon.org feel happy posting this thread on lets say Rabbit forums UK?
No. But that seems a fallacious argument. The criteria for posts on vetsurgeon.org is not the same as for rabbit forums UK.
Are you seriuosly saying that over speying a rabbit, you should cook it is not in poor taste or am I being subjective?
What I am saying is that since I don't claim to be the arbiter of good and bad taste, I cannot possibly say whether the comment was in good or bad taste. Taste is in the eye of the beholder, so I could only tell you whether I personally found it in good or bad taste.

As I said, black humour is more likely to misfire than most. Still, I think the occasional misfire is a price well worth paying for the greater freedom to laugh as hard and as often as humanly possible.

Re: Rabbit spays

Thank-you for your comments. I am a member of the Veterinary Information Network. I can tell you that my response would have been mute compared to those guys. If you want to have a humour section then please feel free to put one up so people can joke to their hearts content. My issue is thet if people do not have constructive comments to make on a genuine question then they should refrain from commenting. We live in times where we are more and more scrutinised. Im sure the vet playing with the anaesthetised cat on the panorama programme was only joking and meant no harm. If I had genuine concerns and wanted to post a question, I would feel belittled by the comments that have been put and may not post again. Would vetsurgeon.org feel happy posting this thread on lets say Rabbit forums UK? how do people think the public would react?. Are you seriuosly saying that over speying a rabbit, you should cook it is not in poor taste or am I being subjective? Its black and white to me, Im saddened really, I thought we were above this and that veterinary only forums would show a little more respect.

I can see why you did.

But, as you kind of allude to yourself, humour (black humour in particular) is a pretty subjective thing. Where you judge something to be in deeply poor taste and unprofessional, the next person may think it quite the funniest thing they've read in ages, and so clearly a joke as to have no bearing on the professionalism of the poster.

You may be offended, and you're absolutely entitled to say so. But I think you should have finished your post one sentence earlier!

Re: Rabbit spays

Im sorry but I find some of the comments made on this thread totally unhelpful and frankly juvenile. The poster is voicing concerns only to have ridiculous comments posted up. I wonder, would any of your rabbit clients (should you have any) like to see these comments. How do you feel they reflect on the profession. In some countries they eat dogs, would you be happy making these comments about canine patients. The question has been answered in amongst the silly posts present but all I want to add is that some people should just grow up and if they dont want to spey rabbits, Butt out of the thread and try acting professionally.

1) Technically quite challenging (well some are, some aren't), especially if not done frequently or regularly (the case for many SA GPs) and technique not taught in any kind of official sense.

2) Relatively high risk of complication from the surgery and/or anaesthesia (as compared to cats + dogs).

I think I do them quite frequently (well I think I do - 5 so far this week although that's more than usual!) and I find the anatomy varies quite considerably between individuals and with age.

Re: Rabbit spays

Long answer - Not really as you are spaying for 3 reasons:-

1. No litters - probably can manage it hormonally but not relaibly

2. Improved temperament - entire females can be quite nasty as spaying early improves that

3. Prevention of uterine carcinomas - such a bigger killer that can only be controlled surgically.
