Yesterday evening I saw a 12week old netherland dwarf rabbit. Had a head tilt to the right for 48 hours, still bright and eating well. The head tilt becomes worse when being handled. Have treated for E cuniculi with panacur and cvered with Baytril

Re: rabbit E. cuniculi?
Way back when, I thought I was being awfully clever by working out the Panacur liquid dose for rabbits as it was much cheaper than using the Panacur rabbit paste BUT the paste is licensed for control and treatment of E.cuniculi, the suspension is not (as far as I can see on data sheets) so technically you should use the paste as per cascade.

Since I realised this, I've not had any suspect cases/prevention needed so I haven't had to charge my client extortionate amounts for the paste, but that day will come!

Or you could just try to foregt that you've realised it.

I give them steroids. Stopped using Panacur as quite dear, moved over to lapizole as the liquid seemed easier to give, worked out cheaper and you have to buy 10 tubes of the Panacur Rabbit paste.
Single tubes of Panacur are available from NVS but I would still probably use Panacur 10% liquid for a 28 day course and try and sell the tubes as routine treatment when the bunnies come for their vaccinations. Not thought of giving NSAIDs or steroids as my cases seem to have got better on fenbendazole alone, may now consider in a severe case.

Re: rabbit E. cuniculi?

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that - another good reason for not keeping them together...

Re: rabbit E. cuniculi?

They rarely get clinical disease but can harbour protozoa and act as a reservoir of infection to any rabbits

I would be reluctant to use steroids to treat an infectious condition. All in-contacts should be considered infected and it would be good practice to treat all rabbits and GPs in the shop.

Check for pretty much any other pathology in other dead rabbit and ideally submit CNS tissue for histopath.

#If the rabbit has an acute head tilt and it is not eating, then steroids are a kind of "kill or cure" route, but they do work really well to reduce the inflammation around granulomatous reactions in the brain which are usually the cause.

I have also used Metacam as the tolerance in rabbits is much better than in cats in terms of renal failure.

I wouldn't be afraid of using either, especially if you have had an a acute fitting rabbit and or litter mate death as this usually indicates a pretty active infection.

You don't have time to wait for 28 days of Panacur to work in these cases.

Re: rabbit E. cuniculi?
The panacur may not be enough to reverse the damage already done by the paraite but it could prevent the others from showing symptoms. Some rabbits can live happily with a bit of a head tilt if other symptoms are controlled by the panacur so long as his appetite and quality of life aren't affected but I suppose that a pet shop wouldn't be able to sell him so may opt for pts.

Re: rabbit E. cuniculi?

I give them steroids.
