I'm looking into the options for treating a long standing pododermatitis in which we've achieved improvement with antibiotics etc, but have just scraped to find a few demodex mites. The dog's feet are still fairly raw and I'd not be keen

Re: Promeris duo - opinions anyone?

Incidentally who recommends alternatives to Frontline, such as Promeris, for tick treatment for pet passport purposes?
If ticks or sandflies likely to be an issue the Scalibor collar is possibly better. I have sold them to people in this country who were having bother with ticks and Frontline. Although no licence they don't seem bothered by fleas either! IIRC the Advantix only gives 2 weeks sandfly prevention versus 5-6 months with the collar.
Imidacloprid (Advantage/Advantix/Advocate) as far as I understand only lasts about 3 weeks for flea control so is not that wonderful for the bulk of clients that are not particularly reliable at regular dosing! A bit off the original subject but this is one of the reasons Advantix is not my first choice. Permethrin does seem to be a surprisingly good as a tick repellent - I suspect this is one reason that owners think pet shop products work! .

Re: Promeris duo - opinions anyone?
Incidentally who recommends alternatives to Frontline, such as Promeris, for tick treatment for pet passport purposes?
I've been recommending Advantix (for dogs, not cats!) for people travelling to the continent with its claim to stop ticks attaching & repel sandflies. Have been using it on my dog and walking/running him in pretty bad tick country and can't remember the last time I had to remove one from him. Anecdotal I know.......

Re: Promeris duo - opinions anyone?
Unfortunately we have not found effipro any better than frontline in cats. Promeris duo is still a 'bomb-proof' product for tick and flea control as long as owners are OK with the smell and the dogs do not show side effects.
Given that we have very few problems with ticks in this area, especially on cats, but fipronil doesn't seem very effective for fleas (whether due to lack of owner compliance or efficacy) and of course cynically to have a POM rival to GSL/SQP shop bought products, we sell hardly any fipronil products of any brand and recommend Advocate for dogs and Stronghold for cats. Effipro is only on the shelf for casuals whose pets aren't registered who want/need something non-POM and for those who insist on Frontline - they are soon convinced that Effipro will substitute when told the price. Not thought about using Promeris primarily for ticks but may now consider this. Incidentally who recommends alternatives to Frontline, such as Promeris, for tick treatment for pet passport purposes?

Re: Promeris duo - opinions anyone?

Fiproline was still more expensive than effipro when we checked.
Effipro comes up if you search for frontline with online chemists so may also be in shops at similar proces. I was in Pets at Home the other day and saw 'Fiproline' - appears to be Pets at Home's Own-brand Frontline at cheaper price than frontline.

Re: Promeris duo - opinions anyone?

I don't have any confidence in spot-on treatments for demodex and still use Aludex except in Staffies with a few spots on their heads. We've used a bit of Promeris for fleas but found it was difficult to apply because it is such a large volume and clients didn't like the smell of coconut! This is the opposite of what Fort Dodge said their market research showed: that clients liked having a larger volume because they thought it was giving them better value for money! However, in the light of other's experience I might try Promeris in the next demodex case. Incidentally, has anyone else discovered Effipro as an alternative to Frontline for a fipronil product? - 4 in a pack and can be sold cheaper volume for volume with a 50% mark-up than the shops sell Frontline.

Re: Promeris duo - opinions anyone?

Thank you to everyone for their advice!

Put the stuff on outside and if possible leave the dog outside for as long as possible. They do not like the smell. We have had a couple of dogs vomit and quite miserable for a couple of days.

Sedation seems fairly common. We probably use it more than most practices because it is amazingly good at preventing ticks.

Warn owners of the patient about the side effects. Even the more severely affected ones here have not come to harm so I have few safety concerns.

Re: Promeris duo - opinions anyone?

We have 'apparently' cured two dogs of demodex which relapsed after Advocate.

Certainly much more effective than Advocate and simpler plus nicer to apply than Aludex. Safer than Ivermectin and I no longer use this unless other treatments have failed

They often get itchier about a week after application, which I believe is due to lots of dead mites causing increased irritation. I tell owners this is a good sign that it's working so they don't get disenchanted.
