We never found anything significant on culture but the animal responds extremely well to antibacterial therapy. However after a period of 3-6 months

Re: Greyhound nail bed infection

Our last recurrent paronychia came back with demodex on the biopsy (adult terrier) - now is the demodex underlying the infection or are both reflective of an underlying immune dysfunction?
Have you cultured for dermatophytes?
We've also seen a few lupoid onchodystrophies recently.

Re: Greyhound nail bed infection

Michael, you have WAY too much time on your hands!

Except they don't sell Dremmel's by getting nice all Americal gals in short skirts to sit with a rather bemused labrador with a questionable facial nerve deficit while a nice chap with an English accent waxes lyrical on the benefit of not cutting through the quick. Ouch! I was soo wincing at the video mock up of that part.

On a bright note, if it stops me ever having to wrestle with a snappy smelly Yorkie that refuses my attempts at a pedicure, then wahey! Where do I get one?!

Re: Greyhound nail bed infection
No the dog has always come to us for nail clips. Now have an image of all the little old ladies filing back dogs nails with their dremmel. Maybe B&Q could start a nail filing service
You say that, but now in addition to buying some permethrin to poison you cat whilst at Wilkinsons you can purchase

The last dog I treated for nail bed infections the owner was using a dremmel to file back the claws - never had any further problems once they stopped doing this. I suspect the microtrauma to the nail and the quick must predispose to nailbed infection. Is this a possiblility in this case?

I've seen a few greyhouds that responded to this, and also one that was blood sampled and proven to have a low zinc level, however I think you need the EFA's in order to uptake zinc from the diet, so even on commercial diets, the EFA supplement should help.

I have also used rigourous daily soaking in povidine with some of these and it seems to help.

Shame about losing the digit without histopath, have you ruled out lupoid onchodystrophy or is this still at the back of our mind?

Re: Greyhound nail bed infection

A zinc supplement will do no harm but I accept there is little proof of its effectiveness.
