Not usually any evidence of specific bone or joint disease.

I advise a change to a less palatable, complete diet (Chappie); increase activity - short frequent exercise at first to increase fitness levels and activity as quickly as possible. Most pups will improve back to normal surprisingly quickly.

Don't whatever you do put on any kind of support dressings/splints/casts etc etc.

No evidence that I know of to implicate selenium deficiency - that was terribly fashionable as the root of all ills while I was a student. What goes around comes around!!

Re: Carpal Hyperextension in juvenile canines

Protect the soft tissues from secondary damage, sorts itself out in the end as the bones elongate. Not nutritional so no diet changes if already on a balanced diet. Controlled exercise on a hard surface was recommended.

Having said this we lost touch with that animal so cannot tell you how it did!!!

Most specialists will give an opinion if you send good photos of the condition!

Re: Carpal Hyperextension in juvenile canines

Hi Andrew,

Have seen some pretty plantigrade hocks in GSDs but never really carpi. However I can't say I would put it down to "nutritional" myself, and would be taking xrays and talking about referral to an Orthopod myself.
