I want to ask. What kind of treatment you use?

CC is unlikely as the dog ages however :)

Re: Calcinosis circumscripta (idiopathic calcinosis) in young German Shepard dog

Update: Apparently it's all healed well, and the owners would like to leave it at that for now.
I currently am dealing with a case in GSD cross (rescue) on it's elbow. He had a lump which was growing under the skin on his left elbow, seen by a collegue, booked in for me to operate. Initially attempted excision but felt very close to joint, so decide to try debulk/biopsy - now with retrospect I wish I'd just tried to take a small biopsy. It was a very hard lump, with white fluid in the middle bled a lot. Sent for histology - came back as CC, which I have to be honest, I don't think I remember having heard of before. 1st post op check at 2 days, all fine. 2nd post op check at one week slight wound break down at bottom of wound, and o. reports some white oozing. I've now been on holiday for 2 weeks so will look up on Monday when I go back, but I am concerned that there'll have be further wound break down and will probably need referral for a better surgeon than me to sort out. Will let you know what has happenned on Monday.

Posted some photos on the clinical cases board (http://www.vetsurgeon.org/media/p/25126.aspx). Hi res images are also available (4Mb each)

The dog would be a few years old now and I might be able to trace it so I'll update the case if any more information is found.

GSDs and large breed dogs are obviously predisposed and most occur at a young age. Clinical/gross photos are always welcome

"Calcinosis
circumscripta is an uncommon syndrome of ectopic idiopathic, dystrophic,
metastatic or iatrogenic mineralisation characterized by deposition of calcium
salts in soft tissues. In a recent retrospective study of 77 canine cases the
age of dogs in the study varied from 4 months to 15 years and 55% were <1
year old, 74% <2 years old and 88% <4 years old. Several pure and mixed,
typically large breed dogs were affected so that 28.6, 13 and 9% were German
Shepherd, Rottweiler and Labrador Retriever respectively. The size of lesions
varied from 2 mm to 13 cm in diameter but most lesions were between 0.5 cm and
3 cm in diameter. Lesions were solitary in 82% of the affected dogs, and
occurred most commonly on the hind feet (50%) and tongue (23%). Treatment by
surgical excision is indicated and recurrence is not encountered.
