Magnetic collars come into the same category - some people swear they work, I have no idea, but I do know that the information which comes with them is a load of bollocks. I have no particular problem with people trying these things as long as it does not cause any harm or prevent the patient from receiving appropriate conventional treatment.

Re: Thornit

Finally, a thread in which I can participate on equal terms.

Thornit may / may not be the best thing since sliced bread and in fact, may / may not cure cancer, West Nile Fever and AIDS (delete according to belief).

I freely admit to constantly writing it surreptitiously on a piece of paper and sliding it across the desk to spaniel owners. Many of them slide it back with the words, 'don't worry, we already have it' which you can interpret in either of two very different ways.

The product seems to be more solid than its hype and has been around since the year dot. Its continued existence through thick and thin, to finally rest in the hands of the redoubtable Miss Betts of Thornham (hence the name) and thence to her son (who is a little more technologically minded) speaks for its support. I remember, as a young vet in west Wales, ringing up for orders (it was that kind of practice) and spending an hour just listening to the lady, who could and would expound on every subject under the sun. Her opinion of the Royal College, which she charged with obstructing her livelihood, still brings tears (of joy) to my eyes. I was utterly heartbroken, after coming home from a travelling stint, to find that she had apparently died.

My understanding from clients is that it's a good ear cleaner, and certainly aids hair plucking in spans, and is also fairly good for feathered feet in water dogs, although an equal number swear by unperfumed athlete's foot powder. In neither case is it really attempting to re-invent the wheel, and some benefit isn't beyond the bounds. I certainly wouldn't use it as a treatment per se, and take great pains not to recommend it, but to mention its existence and to suggest an objective google search, and additionally to stress that it can't be used with any painful ear condition.

Does it work? Ask your spaniel clients. They can't all be idiots, even if they're not quite so clever as us.
