To revert to the original question - what about trying duxycycline .. (...groan).

I had one at Christmas that the O (Mrs) presented a 7 week old with explosive diarrhoea, and ataxia. I dripped it (medial metatarsal vein ideal) and put it in a sling, gave it hydrotherapy in a bath and two days down the line when it wasnt improving the Mr came in, looked at the duck and exclaimed it had never been able to walk properly and Mrs had delusions of being able to save everything and had spent £150 on it to no avail. It was PTS at his request. He couldn't even have it back for " Christmas" due to withdrawal times of the AB's I had given it..

I would say that is devotion above the call of line and duty Emily. Personally I find a broken neck the best cure for most poultry problems

Re: Antibiotics for ducks

[quote user="Emily Nightingale"]I rang Elanco last week to ask them what their recommended withdrawal time for injectable Tylan was.
I have found similar from Elanco - they seem the least helpful drug company.

The BVA poster suggests .5ml per adult chicken/duck 1ml for turkeys - repeat after 48 hours.

I rang Elanco last week to ask them what their recommended withdrawal time for injectable Tylan was. I was in no uncertain terms (and in a slightly harsher headmistress tone than I was expecting!) that it is not recommended at all for use in poultry and to do so is contravening the terms of the data sheet. But then they have to say that don't they.

I have used it though, in the past for Mycoplasma infections which mostly seem to present as URTIs. The withdrawal period for eggs was 7 days from the last day of tx.

Good luck with your duck. I think they are really challenging to treat. Tangentially speaking, I had one at Christmas that the O (Mrs) presented a 7 week old with explosive diarrhoea, and ataxia.

Hope you have better luck than I did on the last one.

I use 20mg/kg/day as a single dose or split into two smaller doses for at least 5 days. I would opt for oral baytril as long as the bird is clinically ok other than the mycoplasma as localised muscle necrosis is common with the injectable form. Other options for mycoplasma are Tylan or Lincospectin.

Re: Antibiotics for ducks

It was a duck with mycoplasma......a poultry expert friend of mine recommended Baytril 0.4ml IM every other day for 3 days.....would you agree with this?
