It was unable to stand, virtually moribund. Rectal temperature was 96'F (36.1'C). It was very thin indeed.

I am quite suspicious that the tomato leaf consumption may be part of the problem but cannot find out just how toxic they are.

I will phone the owners on Monday - thanks for the reminder!

Re: Illness in two young rabbits

I would agree with Marie - It would be very unusual for a rabbit to present in a moribund state and die shortly therafter due to an acute E. cuniculi infection. While it could still be related to E. cuniculi, in my experience acute renal failure appears to be a relativly uncommon presentation. With almost 1/2 of all rabbits testing positive on serology, it may in many cases be an incidental finding, and one needs to keep looking for the diagnosis...

Re: Illness in two young rabbits

Unforunately rabbit 1 is endstage chronic disease with no specific indication of cause.

With no post-mortem there is nothing to guide you as yet so I would look at doing a thorough work-up on the second rabbit to try and narrow the differentials. Complete bloods plus E. cuniculi serology, with radiographs, would be a good starting point.

E.cuniculi is a fabulous catch-all but needs more investigation to assess potential significance. Renal disease is high on the list of differentials but not all renal disease is EC!

Re: Illness in two young rabbits

I have found several websites saying that tomato leaves are toxic to rabbits- but then helpfully just curtailing the advice at 'take rabbit to the vet' ("but I am the vet!?!"). I had to look up potato leaf toxicity in rabbits recently too.

One website names the following clinical signs of tomato leaf toxicity (rabbits were not mentioned, just dog, cat and horse):

Hypersalivation, inappetence, severe gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, drowsiness, CNS depression, confusion, behavioral change, weakness, dilated pupils, slow heart rate.
