We have anumber of animals recently that microchips are not being found on scanning, but can be seen when the animal is radiographed?

My GSD's chip (done in Belgium) did wander rather a lot (ended up in front of right shoulder joint) and when we travelled I used to bring an xray to be able to show the French where to go with the reader as it didn't pick it up when checking over the normal region. I used to be so scared until we were let through and then soooo relieved!! Now don't take them with us anymore, too much stress!

Re: microchip failures?

We must be unlucky. I have come across several failures.Even more migrations and just removed one with a surrounding humungous tissue reaction-implanted several years ago by another vet. On a related subject I had in excess of 50% ear tag loss in my lambs this year and the slaughterhouse complained about sending in replacement tags tied around the necks of animals with severely torn ears. What price pointless regulation vs animal welfare here. Take it from me that inserting a blunt plastic tag into a lamb's ear is much nastier than docking puppy tails - and I don't do that anymore.

Re: microchip failures?

Haven't encountered a failure - but certainly have encountered some that have migrated - as far as below the elbow in a couple of Springers (not sure if that was coincidence, or if they have more, or particularly mobile, s/c tissue). On both occasions the owner brought the dog in as they had felt a lump and thought the dog might have a growth.

A French vet I spoke to about this was quite scathing about our chips - he told me in a superior way that theirs have little spikes on them to stop them wandering ! I told him British chips were far superior to French fries - but don't think he understood.

Re: microchip failures?

I must warn people of a case we had a couple of years ago when a Microchip was inadvertantly removed with surgery for a large mass on the dog's neck, not somethng we thought about at the time until the dog ended up in quaranteen.
On contacting DEFRA we were told we had to restart the Passport process again from scratch - not ideal. All costs for reissuing the passport and doing the blood test were recouped from the chip manufacturer, was just a bit of pain for the owner who couldn't take his dog on holiday for another 7 months.

Re: microchip failures?

Am I the only one who thinks that ear tattoos are almost impossible to read accurately after a couple of years? Have you tried another scanner in case it's a problem with the scanner like a faulty battery?

We had one failure (our head nurse's dog - typical - that she wanted to take abroad to show). I removed the chip UGA, implanted another and the the chip was sent off to the manufacturer who managed to extract the number from it. I can't remember the exact process but we were able to keep the passport and change the chip number on it supported by a certificate from the manufacturer and us saying the original had failed, been recovered and read, and the new one substituted.

Re: microchip failures?

Have only seen one failure personally, it was one of a batch of early faulty biothermal chips, and I believe the problem has been resolved woth their manufacture.
