I will discuss either spaying or trying alizin with the owner (though I'm not looking forward to giving the second injection to a ferret - I assume it will sting like it does in dogs!).

Re: Misalliance in ferret

resident ferret expert - hmmmm not sure I can quite claim that accolade!

Misalliance - Off label use of Alizin so off label consent forms etc

Dose = 10mg/kg subcutaneously twice within 24hrs (in other words as per label for bitches.)

Injected on days 5 and 6 after mating and expected efficacy (from field reports) should be >95%. As no published papers exist I would advise a pregnancy check is carried out 7-10ds after injection or by ultrasound. Pregnancy length ~41ds +/- 3ds. If required a second course of alizin can be given. I would not advise its use beyond day 30 in a ferret.

Abortion is usually within 5ds post injection and may be noticed as a slight discharge to a more obvious red/brown discharge. Temperature should be normal so any elevation is suggestive of infection.

Any experiences with these drugs used off label in exotics / small furries is always gratefully received - please let Virbac know.

Side effects in ferrets have yet to be reported... but from use in other species the typical reactions are based around local injection site reactions (oil based product).

Any more questions on Alizin (aglepristone) or Suprelorin (deslorelin) off label contact Virbac UK - 01359 243243

Gonad removal (apparently) leads to adrenal disease subsequently, and that the better option re desire to neuter is to use implants : Deslorelin
