Not trying to be argumentative, but what I and others, did was give testosterone to bitches with mammary tumours which reduced their size by 50ish% in a week or so, and made them so much more "dense" and "circumscribed" making prompt surgery easier and the margins much more definite.

With multiple metastases [er, not more than, say, ten] I'd just remove them all, no biopsy, but an obviously guarded prognosis.

You may be surprised at how effective early removal is, even done more than twice.
Not argumentative at all - though I have no idea where I would procure testosterone! For clarity, there wasn't an obvious problem with the margins on the original mass removal, it appeared to be completely excised with >3mm normal tissue. Luckily it was one of those solid, dense ones rather than the soft ones with indistinct edges.

I'm not sure removing all the new masses will be practical, unfortunately. She's covered in them pretty much stem to stern, mainly along her back. They vary in size from about 1/2 a cm and raised to very subtle thickenings of the skin. The lumps themselves aren't painful, so unless I can get them all (and I suspect I couldn't) I might cause her more harm than good by trying. Plan was to harvest a few for diagnostic purposes as, to be honest I'm suspicious (and the specialist I chatted to agrees) that this behaviour isn't consistent with the histological findings of the original mass. Poor dog might in fact have a completely different primary tumour somewhere.

RE: mammary carcinoma
Bumping this old thread
8 1/2 year old springer spaniel, had a mammary carcinoma removed in Oct 2017 (along with a benign mixed mammary tumour and a lipoma) - presented recently with multiple small firm nodules in the skin, FNA suggestive of malignant epithelial neoplasia and suspected to be metastases of the original mammary mass. I plan to (if the owner wishes) biopsy a few of the masses (she has upwards of a dozen) to find out for sure what they are, but wondering what experience others have of these?

Re: mammary carcinoma

I had a dog with mammery carcinoma and a chest full of golf balls go for ages (>1 year) on meloxicam alone, did great. Not that the tumour changed or the golf balls reduced, they just stopped getting bigger. Statistically insignificant sample size n=1 but I would do it again.

Not every carinoma responds to meloxicam they need cox 2 receptors I think but I have found it can work great in cases of carcinoma anywhere, anal gland/sac (take your pick) carcinomas and small intestinal adenocarcinoma too. Resected a small intestinal adenocarcinoma which had concurrent adenocarcinomatosis of the omentum and peritoneum and eventually euthanased it 12 months later. Went problem free until about 2d before the very end.
