Any suggestions?
It initially presented 5 weeks ago, it a very very bouncy 18 month old.
Hi,

I found it in one of mine orthopedic books. I hope it would
be helpful for you.

“Occasionally the elbow remains unstable due to stretching
or rupture of the collateral ligaments. Stability can be restored by replacing
the medial collateral ligament with a wire prosthesis anchored by two screws,
one placed in the medial condyle of the humerus and the other in the ulna” (from
“A guide to canine orthopaedic surgery” H.R. Denny, second edition).

P.S. The wire is
going in figure of eight.

It is sad for me that I don’t have possibility to scan you
picture with this.

However, good luck!

I'm no orthopaedic expert anywhere other than the skull, and it's a long time since I did anything very clever with an elbow, but just in case none of this forum's resident experts comes along in time: Why not then just replace the collateral ligament with the tried and trusted two screws and figure of eight nylon? It doesn't matter then where the original ligament has gone.

[/quote]

My thoughts entirely but being a complete coward would avoid opening up the joint unless I could see something on X-ray. However I would use a figure of 8 wire prosthesis secured by 2 screws: one through the medial condyl of the humerus and on in the medial ulnar.

Re: Elbow luxation.

I'm no orthopaedic expert anywhere other than the skull, and it's a long time since I did anything very clever with an elbow, but just in case none of this forum's resident experts comes along in time:

Thought one. Is there a developmental deformity or deficiency of any sort in this elbow? If so, I'd think you were rather on a loser if referral is out of the question.

Thought two. Obviously open reduction will enable you to clear out any junk that's blocking complete reduction. Why not then just replace the collateral ligament with the tried and trusted two screws and figure of eight nylon? It doesn't matter then where the original ligament has gone.

Thought three. As Fossum says, if you identify an avulsed fragment that's big enough, you can screw it back on.

Thought four. Have you got a copy of Fossum?

As I say, I'm not an elbow expert, so if anyone has better practical suggestions from a position of greater knowledge, that's fine.
