Found one tonight with someone asking for how to deal with tear stains. Fair enough, then someone starts talking about it having "Red Yeast" (which causes the redness) which is a bacteria

Re: Interesting "diseases"

I had a client (bichon owner) ask me about angel eyes. I told her it was a load of twaddle and not to waste her money - a thin coating of vaseline would be the best advice I could offer. She went ahead and spent an awful lot of money buying angel eyes. It didn't work. Why won't they listen?

Re: Interesting "diseases"

Yep have heard that one, and have clients that swear by it.

It probably does bind porphyrins and prevent some degree of staining, however most of these dogs are just copiously producing tears or have problems with tear drainage, because their breeding and conformation are poor.

Re: Interesting "diseases"

On an externship in the US I saw a dog that was on "Angel Eyes" (that I had to google because I had never heard of it before!) which contains Tylosin (+ voodoo magic?) and it actually appeared to work (though I have no idea how much staining the dog had before the 'Angel Eyes' was administered).

Anyway, VIN tells me that it binds porphyrins that cause the staining.

Re: Interesting "diseases"

Hmmm. In my book, tear stains are just that. Usually found in brachycephalic and small or "toy" breeds, who have predilection for exophthalmos and poor lacrimal duct conformation, and is the same as a translocated salivary duct overflowing the lower palpebral sulcus over a white coated dog with KCS.

They are usually tear overflow, and no amount of "witchcraft" will get rid of them short of peroxide.

Canker, well I'm no dermatologist, but a predilection for droopy eared, long coated dogs, along with some other breed predilections and assosciated signs of atopy, (such as Westies and Staffies with "red" stained feet), would make me say..........Otitis caused by yeast/bacterial/mycoplasma overgrowth.
