Dog improved but after another 2 weeks developed ascites and oedema of back legs

Re: Ascitic dog with high glucose in transudate
we have a 6 years old YT with history of sickness and diarrhea, culture =e.coli treated with ATB as per sensitivity test, bloods and urine without patol. changes
What was the antibiotic? Could all this be a drug reaction? Is the dog on any antibiotics?

If it is I would stop.

Re: Ascitic dog with high glucose in transudate

I found this article on glucose in ascitic fluid in people. I would imagine it's the same in dogs.

http://content.karger.com/ProdukteDB/produkte.asp?Doi=197334

"In patients with ascites produced by portal hypertension or hypoproteinemia, the glucose values were higher in ascitic fluid than in blood. In patients with peritoneal affections, the glucose levels were mostly equal to or lower than those in blood."

Did you check bile acids?

Re: Ascitic dog with high glucose in transudate

I am struggling to think of a diagnostic significance of high glucose in ascitic fluid. Both neoplastic and septic effusions will more often cause a lower glucose in effusion than in blood.

I would be interested to hear the outcome!

It is high on our suspicion list but we have been thrown by lack of protein or glycerides in the transudate and such high glucose reading. Will send fluid for amylase/ lipase though if bloods inconclusive, thank you.

Any idea what's happening with the sugars, have you come across this before or do you have any experience with anything giving false positive results? (I know ATB can increase Glucose reading but he was started after we took sample and previous course finished 3 weeks before...

Many thanks again.

Is the dog hypoalbuminaemic as a cause of the ascites? Have you done a cPLI to assess for pancreatitis?

You can also run amylase/lipase on abdominal fluid as a suggestion of pancreatitis.
