In a previous life, some years ago now, I used to do some of the marketing of Rearguard.

You say 'only a deterrent', which I read (perhaps wrongly) as having some sort of repelling effect. In fact, it contains cyromazine, an insect growth regulator which prevents the correct formation of insects' chitinous parts.[/quote]

No dig, but the mode of action of Rearguard seems to elude many owners, nurses and vets; I seem to spend lots of time explaining it. I'd hope the owner has noticed the blowfly eggs in the rabbit's fur before the rearguard has been 'called into action'.

Also, despite the limitations of the SAES, it does give us some products to use, and I find Xeno Ultra (permethrin) to be useful as fly control.

So strictly speaking, I'd probably use 'preventative' in preference to 'only a deterent' as the adjective!

Is this post almost a definition of teaching granny to suck eggs. If it is, I'm sorry

Fraid I can't answer the original question about doses, though! You could ask for Novartis' professional services on 01276 694402

Re: Rear Guard and guinea pigs

Have you tried the arthritic guinea pig on nsaids, and neutraceuticals? I have one of my own g.pigs on cartrophen, and magnacare, with an occasional dose of metacam oral. all off licence but not seen any s/e in last 12 months of use. Rearguard is only a deterent, I would prefer the owner to keep washing and clipping to prevent matting.

good luck!
