I was aware as a student seeing practice of people using proVseal but it must have discontinued around the time I graduated. I gather people were quite positive about it.

What are the potential benefits of the "professional" application Evelyn? I'm shocked a dentist is keen on RF2. Is there any evidence behind it?

Sounds like "boswolox" to me.

[/quote]

"Keen" is possibly too strong a word, but then so is "shocked".

I am not aware of any evidence behind it (no doubt the Genitrix adviser will be along soon if I'm wrong) except what the manufacturers present, which is one in-vitro study of shall we say arguable significance. Still, I thought it was worth a try and as I say it seems to help here and there.

The idea as you all know is that it prevents or reduces the initial adherence of certain bacterial species to the salivary pellicle which initiates the formation of plaque. Now in the ordinary way plaque is forming again within two hours of brushing or a "prophylaxis" (misnomer but the term has stuck). That's Ok, all we are usually concerned with is preventing it become too thick or "mature". However, I'll apply the Dentagen sometimes in cases where the periodontal defences of a tooth or a whole dentition are severely compromised, or maybe where a wide expanse of dentine is exposed due to gingival depth loss, or maybe where I've done gingivoperiosteal flap surgery to expose and plane a root (often in canine teeth of large dogs, greyhounds, German Shepherds) and I want to minimise plaque but I don't want anyone crashing over it with a toothbrush............... all just examples. In situations, to sum it up, where the teeth need all the help they can get it's an extra measure that can be used and it certainly does no harm.

It's not the same as ProVSeal by the way. As I recall that was a species of paraffin wax - the clever bit was the added "transfer" molecule (probably a tadpole shaped one) that enabled the hydrophobic wax to adhere to the hydrophilic tooth. Fine in theory and in vitro, in practice it was 'orrible.

Yeah I'd agree with that because I think I know what you mean. I don't think you mean gingivitis though. That's the first mildish stage and it's reversible with straight oral hygiene.

An enzymatic paste like Virbac's (actually I'm not sure the enzyme system does anything much in practice, but it's a nice and effective paste anyway) for most, and the creamy chlorhexidine one (Parodongyl) in cases where the periodontal defences of the remaining teeth are severely compromised, hanging in the balance as it were, or there's some other reason why I think I want an actual antibacterial application.

Re: rf2 dental sealants

They are launching an rf2 toothpaste as well as the sealant, chews, mouthwash.....

The genitrix rep wasn't entirely convincing on the science of rf2 but then I don't think I've ever come across any evidence on which toothpaste components are best.

Re: rf2 dental sealants

What are the potential benefits of the "professional" application Evelyn? The "professional" application that you put on after polishing I think brings benefits; the chews to continue at home are more dubious but seem to have done the trick in a few cases.

It's not a cure-all, and it's not a substitute for brushing.
