The dose in the formulary states 0.3mg/kg every 24 hours and I have a patient that weighs 20.8kg giving a dose of 6.24mg per day. He went on for a good 18months with no problems, apart from the tumour.

As far as overdosing goes, at one point my boss saw him for a "flare up" and increased the dose to 30mg! It was 3m before I saw the dog and lowered the dose. Again, no side effects.

Re: Piroxicam use
What are the risks of overdosing with piroxicam, in terms of gastric ulceration etc?
J Vet Intern Med. 1994 Jul-Aug;8(4):273-8. Knapp DW et al.
Piroxicam therapy in 34 dogs with transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder:
34 dogs on piroxicam; "toxicity consisted of gastrointestinal irritation in 6 dogs
and renal papillary necrosis (detected at necropsy) in 2 dogs". Not great!

On a separate note, have you talked to an oncologist, particularly about combination treatment e.g. mitoxantrone?
(HENRY C. Like many NSAIDs it is not without its side effects but I would be quite happy to use 10mg in a 20kg dog . If you want to be clinically pure i am sure you could give gut protectants(cytotec is very useful) and monitor kidney function but the dog has a tumour go for it

Re: Piroxicam use

yes, i have always used meloxicam instead. it does seem to have similar results anecdotally.

Re: Piroxicam use

You could use Meloxicam instead?
