I've been asked to give acupuncture to a 12 year old clydesdale, who has had long term problems with his feet. He has severe sandcracks, white line separation, and had multiple foot abscesses last summer

Re: advice wanted for chronic hoof wall problems

Myself I would get a proper farrier rather than this barefoot malarkey (google it!) - there was a series of strongly worded letters a while back on the subject in Vet Times in memory serves. Farrier trains longer than a Vet any wally with a rasp can call them-self a barefoot trimmer.

I would go for a month of TMPS. I have anaesthatised feet, pared out sandcracks and filled the fissures with PMMA glue (Technovit) and had some success. You have to be brave and get back to oozy blood.

Re: advice wanted for chronic hoof wall problems

thanks for your replies. He has had blood tests done - not for cushings specifically - they showed a slightly raised LDH. Apart from his feet, he looks a picture of health.

I discussed him today with his regular vet, and we're going to suggest the foot baths, with possibly further bloods tests. Referral has been discussed, which the owner is reluctant to do, partly due to cost, and partly due to the long drive necessary.

Any further advice is welcome.

Has he had any blood work done, as the chronicity of the feet, abscesses etc suggests he may have an underlying problem, such as Cushings?
