Thanks for the tips on the procedures guide... apparently as a student member I can only download the pdf rather than get the hard copy, but as I'm about to start my emergency and critical care nights it's come at the perfect time!

I have and like Manual of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Medicine. Only negative is it's American so uses some non-standard units (e.g. blood glucose) and non-UK drugs, but not a huge issue.

A separate book yes, but have a look at the new BSAVA Guide to Procedures in Small Animal Practice

The BSAVA Manual of Emergency and Critical Care is excellent, perfect for when you're on-call by yourself and need to know what to do!

If you are a member of BSAVA (students can join for free as 'e-members') they have recently published a 'Guide to Procedures in Small Animals' (or something like that!) which is given to all members for free. I've picked up my copy at Congress, and am keeping it very handy at all times! It's got step by step guides to everything from thoracocentesis, BALs, anything you'd want, even the more random things like semen collection in the cat! This book is a God send when you're stuck out of hours and have a cat with fluid in its chest!

I'd take advantage of the student discount that you get on BSAVA manuals and stock up while you can, I only bought 2 when I was a student and wish I'd bought more!
