I do them the same as Guinea Pigs, an incision over each testicle, closed castration (or close the tunic if inadvertently open) then a single suture to close the wound. A dose of metacam and job done.

The owner called twice in the week, once to ask about cost again, but this time saying for castrate, and the second time to say that the 'male' was, this minute, giving birth. They might want the other male castrated, but it's all very up in the air.

With degu castrations do you do a prescrotal incision or incise over each testis?

I have never spayed one but have castrated a couple. I wouldn't have thought they would have been much different from a hamster - they can be spayed for cystic ovaries or pyo's without too much fuss. I would use isoflurane, find (or make) a tight fitting face mask and don't forget the pain relief.
