In Spain unfortunately we have lots and lots of cases of leishmaniosis, as in Portugal, by the moment the only effective treatment for Leishmaniosis is :

- Alopurinol 10-15 mg/kg twice a day, at least for a year.

- meglumine antimonium 40- 50 mg/kg twice a day SC for 40 days (first round)

- You have to control the evolution of the disease performing proteinograms every 15 days, as Beta and gamma globulines are usually very high, with A/G quite low.

You also have to control albumine levels, as Leishmaniosis could affect the kidney glomerules

.it,s also necessary to do CBC, urea and creatinine every 15 days or once a week, at least while the dog is under the glucantime(R) treatment, and perform protein/creatinine ratio in urine, to have a more accurate idea of the renal functionality...

I hope this helps,

Kind regards,

Here in Valencia (Spain) we have hundreds of cases every year. Only in the last month we have found more than ten...

Allopurinol is not enough, beleve me... you´re not doing nothing to combat the parasite, probably the dog becomes better but the dissease will advance.

Meglumine antimoniate and miltefosin are both improved treatments to kill leishmania sp. In advanced cases, when glomerulonephritis has been stablised, we use prednisolone at high dosage to get down the Ab response (the cause of renal failure).

Be care with miltefosin!!! there are lots of cases of pancitopenia. Be care with antimoniate too!!! thats very dangerous when renal/hepatic failure is present.

I don´t know your importation drugs law. But we have lot of Glucantime!!!!! maybe we can send you some???

Re: Leishmania

Meglumine seems really expensive to import.I've discussed treatment with the owner- and he doesnt want to import drugs- so we're just going to use allopurinol.I'm not sure how long this will keep the dog in remission compared to an initial course of both meglumine and allopurinol. We'll have to see.

Re: Leishmania

We've had a couple of cases of Leismaniasis at my practice in imported dogs. We have used allopurinol and it has kept them in remission for long periods of time. It is easy to get hold of and cheap. The other commonly recommended treatment meglumine antimonate is an injectable apparently fairly widely used in Europe but it is not available in the UK you would have to get an SIC to import it. Everything I have ever read has said that remission not cure is all you can hope to achieve.

Re: Leishmania

This is an email forwarded to me by Action Against Poisoning which came from a vet in I believe Portugal.
Dear

This is the answer I got from my veterinarian mrs Botelho, Marta in Portugal - Algarve.

For the animals.

love

Jose

-------- Original-Nachricht --------
Datum: Thu, 18 Mar 2010 18:39:58 +0000
Von: Marta Botelho <martambotelho@hotmail.com>

Betreff: RE: different treatment/try-out for Leishmania by Vibactra Plus

Dear Jose

I am sorry to cold down your enthusiasm, but that medication is not a treatment for leishmaniosis.. You have in Portugal similar drugs(natural ones) that can be used as an aid of the treatment, but it only enhances the immune system, without killing directly the parasites...

Of course you will see improvement of the clinical signs, but please alert your friend that a cure is IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even if the test comes back negative, it only means that the amount of parasites in the blood is very low and the test does not detect it. The parasite is still active in the bone marrow, the nails and the spleen.

She can get Alopurinol at any country, and if she uses it coupled with that Vibactra Plus, I believe she can have a dog without clinical signs for a long, long time....

Once more, please let her know that THERE IS NO CURE FOR LEISHMANIOSIS!!!!!!!!! There is a very good treatment for keeping him alive and well for years, but not cure him... Unfortunately :(

The article in the ophthalmology magazine is already published!!!!!!!!!

Love

Marta

One is at local shelter which they wanted to PTS and we asked if we could trial Vibactra Plus on it. The other is with owner.

Here is Turkey there are many cases of Leishmania. We also have so many cases of Distemper and Parvo. We did some research and were looking at a drug called Vibactra Plus that claimed to kill viruses. It was very cheap and rather my practice manager persuaded me to try with nothing to lose! We had three puppies from the shelter with suspected Parvo, but then they tested positive for Corona. Each pup made a full recovery using this drug, but we have many more trial to do before we know that this drug alone was the cure.

The drug company told us this drug will work on Giardia and Coccidia and microscopic parasites so we thought we would give it a try. Both dogs are showed improvement within 5 days. Ulcers and lesions have disappeared and hair growing back. Both dogs putting on weight and signs of depression have gone. We are not quite sure what to make of it!

There is a cycle of treatment they recommend for maximum results which is 10 days treatment, 10 days rest, 10 days treatment, until three 10 day treatments have been given. We are in second stage of treatment with first dog and first stage with second dog. We clearly need to re test again on com[pletion to see if there will be a negative result and the dogs are free of Leishmania.

We remain sceptical as maybe the dogs are in temporary remission. At spokesperson at Action Against Poisoning told us that Leishmania could remain in the bone marrow!

We are trying without success to find anyone in the veterinary profession that has tried this drug with clinical success but we cant find anyone!

Re: Leishmania

I would welcome advice on treating Leishmaniasis as I haven't dealt with a case before. This is a 3yr cross breed who's been in the UK for 12mths and originated in Greece. It presented last week with a months history of diarrhoea and weight loss, and a longer period of mild nasal discharge and some sneezing. It had a mild peripheral lymphadenopathy.Bloods showed a marked hyperglobulinaemia and a hypoalbuminaemia.Renal function ok.Mesenteric lymph nodes enlarged. And a positive Leishmania PCR ( on peripheral blood).
