I was wondering if anyone is doing the A or B cert avp modules at the moment? I've enrolled on the C modules of the Diagnostic Imaging cert, and want to do the A+B modules whilst collecting case studies. Any thoughts on which uni provides the

Re: cert avp- A and B modules

Your A & B modules are going to have a fairly similar course outline wherever you do it.

The A module is 'Professional key skills' which covers communication, management, business skills, ethics, animal welfare etc. The B module is 'Practice skills' with large, equine or small animal bias depedning on which way you go.

It is the 3 C modules where there is variablility. From what I recall when I looked a few months ago: Middlesex offer the management/business type C modules (therefore not likely to be very clinical), Liverpool offer the equine ones and Edinburgh and RVC offer the small animal ones. Not sure re the other universities but one must offer large animal, another pathology etc.

To complete the CertAVP you must pass the mandatory A and B modules and then choose whichever C modules correspond to the discipline you fancy. Hope this makes sense - it took me a while to get my head round it

Re: cert avp- A and B modules

when i looked into it Liverpool seemed to offer the best clincal A module as they actually offer workshops to help you along which i thought was great. Only problem is they only offer equine B modules so that is a pain, tho they are looking into the small animal ones now apparently.

Those of you who went with Middlesex University - how clinically based was it? I got the impression it was less about the clinical side of things and more about 'good practice' ie. clinical audit etc. May just be that i don't understand it very well (the RCVS descriptions don't seem very clear to me)

Re: cert avp- A and B modules

I am currently doing the 'A' module through the RVC. It is all done online and you have option of paying a little extra for access to the university blackboard system, library and ATHENS. I have gone for the option of online support, which I have found valuable - the Blackboard discussion board hasn't added much, but I would have been lost without the ATHENS journal access.

The module is in the form of a series of essays covering various topics from animal welfare and ethics through to legislation and marketing. I am finding the essays quite challenging as they are mostly of a social science style, a bit of a change when everything you have written since school is clinical!

The timescales for completing workare are flexible - you can submit as little or as much work as you want between deadlines. All in all I have found the RVC system good so far though admittedly I am only in the early stages. Hope this helps.

Re: cert avp- A and B modules

I'm just going to do one module at a time I think. I'm not sure how i fit in the time to do everything as it is, but this is something i really do want to get started with.

Has anyone else any experience of other providers? they seem few and far between, and to be honest I'm a little nervous of the whole distance learning thing too!

Re: cert avp- A and B modules

I did mine with Middlesex too. Very much suggest them, run by a number of group meetings and online group support. Developed in a way to teach candidates the art of adult learning and very much focused on how you have learnt from experiences and how this has changed your way of professional work. The case studies are designed to be done in general practice and it does not matter if the treatment was not optimal due to financial concerns etc, so long as other aspects are discussed - again, its all about what you have learnt from the case and how to improve your managment of a such case.

Re: cert avp- A and B modules

I'm glad you've asked this, because i'm thinking of enrolling for them.
