PD/PUnfor 4 days. NAD on exam.
Glucosuria and hyperglycaemia
Checked free catch urine sediment and saw this. They appear in strings with filaments between them. I suspect an artefact..pollen? Yeast?

I have rechecked a fresh midstream urine sample this afternoon and no evidence of those weird structures.

PH8, glucose++++, no white blood cells.

I will continue my Pu/Pd work up :)

RE: What's this in a urine sediment?

Hi Sara,
Don't look like plant or mycotic spores, more crystalline and most like 'stained'/discoloured struvite as orthorhombic etc, so maybe still contaminant but with an extra, or different, element and composition to explain the unusual colour......
No more classical urates to support that aspect and origin with liver dysfunction otherwise etc....
Likely still contaminant and not sure how it was collected to add any further support, but could also reflect the bacteria (eg Staph) in the enviro and altered crystal habit to explain the discolouration and linkages....
You could add a weak acid (eg. white vinegar) and see if they dissolve, presuming the Ph was alkaliine??
No obvious RBCs nor WBCs to support infection/inflammation and while there is a lot in there (spermaturic etc), may need a cysto or fresh sample to exclude a bacterial infection given the apparent diabetes mellitus, if clinically concerned?
Regards, Roger
