The VMD judges the suitability of reclassification on grounds of safety.

Indications may be removed: in the case of Frontpro (which is the same as Nexgard), the Nexgard indications for the treatment of demodicosis, sarcoptic mange and ear mites were removed from Frontpro (i.e. uses requiring veterinary diagnosis) and wording added to the product info to say that Frontpro can be used for managing FAD that has been diagnosed by a vet.

Lotilaner tablets (i.e. OTC version of Credelio; no brand name announced yet) has recently been reclassified as NFA-VPS so that is likely to come to market before long.

if it can be used safely, reclassification means there is wider access to the product: in this case alternatives to fipronil and imidacloprid spot-ons.

And you're right there is a now a glaring disparity in the supply routes with vets being required to do a physical examination before supplying POM-V afoxolaner while none is required for supply of Fronpro (for flea and tick infestations).

RE: Parasiticide POM-V vs NFA-VPS dichotomy, why?
while the vet is obliged conduct a physical examination at point of prescribing for the equivalent?
or just stock the nfa-vps one?
haven't compared list prices, but it's noticeable that the same online pharmacy sells Frontpro for £39.99 for 3 however Nexgard for £28.80; and Advantage 3x tablets for £29.94 yes Credelio £43.99 for 6!

Essentially when the product is new and they want vets to drive sales of a new product they promise the vets it'll always be a vet-only product, then when they want to increase sales further they apply for a lower category to sell through big petshop and the online route. Maybe I'm too cynical.

RE: Parasiticide POM-V vs NFA-VPS dichotomy, why?

Been wondering about this myself. Thinking of just stocking the nfa-vps and have done with the extra check

RE: Parasiticide POM-V vs NFA-VPS dichotomy, why?

Careful what you wish for.........
