This cat was seen by me for 4 metacarpal fratures were plates and screws were appllied. A bandage was placed afterwards, toes out, to prevent swelling and the owners advised to go to referring Vets to remove it in 3-5 days.

Leaving teh toes out, particularly as much toe as it appears in the picture, opens the possibility of teh bandage compressing the blood flow to and from the toes and therefore vascular injury. Including the toes makes it easier to have even pressure fom the bandage over the entire paw and avoids this. You cannot monitor swellling of the toes but I think it’s is much less likely to occur. If the toes are left out, only the nails and nail beds are exposed (most of the toe itself is covered)

RE: Viable paw?

Hello Alasdair.
Why is that? In order to prevent exactly what happened? How do you monitor swelling?
