Would love to get some opinions on this case.
Atticus is a 5.5yo GSD who belongs to an RVN I work alongside. In summer he started vocalising when eating- he would cry out and whine at every mealtime. Aside from this he was completely normal

RE: Thoughts on this chronic enteropathy case?

Unhelpfully put

No, don't do this. We know that actually the gross (and therefore ultrasound viewable) and microscopic (biopsy) changes associated with a chronic enteropathy do no improve even when clinical signs are well managed.

RE: Thoughts on this chronic enteropathy case?

Prednisolone is the way to go.

Did the CT scan include his teeth? The reason I ask is that I have seen a few CT reports now, where dental disease including tooth root abscessation has been noted as an incidental finding. One case was a Greyhound that had an aggressive tumour in a sinus, that also had 4 abscessated teeth

RE: Thoughts on this chronic enteropathy case?

Could the owner video the behaviour so we can look at what the dog is doing ? Have you considered cracked tooth syndrome or enamel hypoplasia? Maybe the symptoms were triggered in summer because we tend to give cooler water then.
Can the owner think of any other changes in his behaviour or movements in general? (To rule out more systemic issues)
Also, if symptoms are resolved with soaked HA, I'd go for a second US scan and if the inflammation is mostly resolved taper the steroids off as it may not be a long term necessity in his case. I believe the inflammatory findings were a coincidental one and Atticus wasn't showing symptoms of it from what I understood - not yet at least. (Also the fact that he was doing OK on an NSAID makes it less likely to be the main issue, not a total rule out but I usually expect more sensitivity to NSAIDs in dogs with chronic enteropathy especially during a flare up.)

RE: Thoughts on this chronic enteropathy case?

Gosh, what a lot of money you've spent to trial the dog on some steroids

You say
he has been taking the pred and eating soaked HA, with symptoms resolved. However as soon as any hard food is fed (HA only), the whining and crying when eating returns
Do you have any reason whatsoever why this dog can't remain on soft food? Have you tried soft/wet food only and no pred? I see no need for hard food if it causes problems.

Maybe I'm lazy, but sometimes the simplest answer is the easiest.

(You also mention both prednisone and prednisolone, assume the latter?)
