I didn’t ask for studies done but there referral specialists on here who may know? These referrals would have been lame dogs non-responsive to NSAIDs, minimal pathology on exam and x-ray beyond expected/ ‘normal’ age related OA

RE: Lymes Disease - could this be it?

Interesting. On one hand we are supposed to reserve antibiotic use to absolutely necessary, on the other hand trial it in a lame dog. Not suggesting every dog should have joint taps and cultures, but some numbers would be good in terms of how likely is septic arthritis. I'd always assumed these animals would be VERY sore and pyrexic

RE: Lymes Disease - could this be it?

The other thing to consider is septic arthritis- apparently a lot more common in dogs than I realised as our local referral specialist would regularly ask if we had done a trial antibiotic rx before referring for lameness investigation

RE: Lymes Disease - could this be it?

I’ve never seen cases of it in dogs, although quite a few of my local friends - hikers and mountain bikers - have had it.
I think it's unlikely. But you may have seen true cases given your location. But the ones that read the textbooks have pyrexia, shifting lameness, and obvious painful joints.

What test do you normally use? Joint taps or paired serology?
