I am wondering where I can refer rabbit, guinea pig, chinchilla dentals to in the West Midlands with a good conscience? Both as a general inquiry and as a concrete cause I've just seen a rabbit with what looks like a complicated crown fracture

RE: Does anybody know where to refer rabbit dentals to?

[quote userid="13609" url="~/f/clinical-questions/30773/does-anybody-know-where-to-refer-rabbit-dentals-to"]I am wondering where I can refer rabbit, guinea pig, chinchilla dentals to in the West Midlands with a good conscience?
Me. I might as well be direct!

Bangor's not in the West Midlands but we're easy to reach from Ledbury and the scenery is grand if you come the pretty way.

RE: Does anybody know where to refer rabbit dentals to?

Not much help currently but as of 2024 I will be opening an exotics referral clinic in Cleobury (South Shropshire) covering the West Midlands. At the moment I can arrange to see referral cases at local clinics where needed on an ad hoc basis so if you don't find any options let me know and I can sort this.

Marie

RE: Does anybody know where to refer rabbit dentals to?

This is not a perfect answer - but a practical help.

If you have a friendly local dentist they might gift you a dose of Dycal (this is Calcium Hydroxide) that sets quite hard. It is not "sticky" but it can be placed onto any exposed pulp and will often stay in place for a while. Can be done easily conscious.

Another option is to use Tissue Glue (at a pinch superglue) on the exposed surface.

Both of these will help to protect the pulp. Continued vitality of the tooth can be measured by continued eruption. Hopefully should do OK. If not - then incisor extraction can be performed.

NB Pain relief

Happy to see the case if you wanted

RE: Does anybody know where to refer rabbit dentals to?

We would be more than happy to help at Highcroft Exotic Vets in Bristol. https://highcroftvetreferrals.co.uk/referral-services/rabbits-rodents-exotics/
