These are my favourites - they are relatively expensive and cheaper versions are available, but should give you an idea of shape....

Use monofast instead - cheaper and dyed. It still seems to be readily available despite the previous discussion.

can i just ask if anyone has tried ordering dyed monocryl plus 5-0 with a P3 13mm 3/8C reverse cutting prime needle 70cm pack of 36 MCP491H?

I know codes often differ in UK and not all types available in uk, but does come up on uk part of ethicon search: www.ethicon.com/.../mcp491h-3

vet here currently uses 5-0 monocryl with similar needle, but undyed, and would prefer I order a dyed version.

EDIT: and if anyone has a preferred periosteal elevator for dental work (either a specific model or a description of what is necessary head-wise) then our vet would like a new one of those also.

But – with real respect – in my opinion 4/0 is too heavy for many intra-oral applications.

I was told, and it seems believable, that the resorbable materials 5/0 and finer are used by plastic surgeons, and they don't want dyed material because their patients object to this wriggly coloured line underneath their wound.

Of course, whatever the dealers say, there are few (any?) suture materials actually designed for veterinary use. We have to use what's been designed for human surgery.

That's what I use, but they are discontinuing it hence the question. I need something that dyed ideally or I can't see it

Monofast (Kruuse equivalent of monocryl) 5/0 for pretty much everything. I used to use monocryl, but you can't get dyed monocryl in this size in the UK - I used to order it at great expense from Sweden until I discovered the Kruuse version which is cheaper and dyed so visible!

6/0 Vicryl.

5/0 Monocryl.

Sometimes 4/0 Monocryl if I want a bit of extra beef – obvious examples would be maxillectomies and mandibulectomies.

Vicryl is supposed to be inferior because of being braided therefore capillary. I have never noted any serious adverse effect in real life from it's being capillary. It's easier to manipulate and knot, and I can see it. I'd use 6/0 Monocryl, but I know I would always lose the free end. I think I've identified a Monocryl equivalent that's dyed and I may order some of that in 6/0.

The needle is important. Three-eighths circle reverse cutting is best. 11mm for 6/0, 13mm for 5/0, 19mm for 4/0
