I am curently starting to have more requests for exotic surgeries and I must admit I am not sure what anaesthesia protocol to use for guinea pigs.
I found one recent but cannot find any articles to support this combinations. I changed to it after ranitidine became more difficult to obtain, I find the anaesthetics are a bit nicer. Honestly, I'm not convinced we need prokinetics but additional pain relief always seems sensible!

RE: Can you recommend a guinea pig anaesthetic protocol?

How good is Maropitant rather than Metoclopramide for managing gut stasis, given that it is a centrally acting anti-emetic?

I don't usually use either routinely, and find most patients will eat on recovery. If they don't I will use it.

Usually use Medetomidine, Ketamine, Methadone, and pre op Metacam.

RE: Can you recommend a guinea pig anaesthetic protocol?

Hi Alexandra

I suspect that there are almost as many potential anaesthetic protocols as there are exotics vets!! For most of my routine rodent patients I use medetomidine 0.05mg/kg, ketamine 5mg/kg, methadone 0.5mg/kg all im. Then sc meloxicam 1mg/kg, maropitant 1mg/kg. Iso/o2 via mask as needed. IM atipamezole 0.25mg/kg postop. Obviously this is all unlicensed and limited published info!
