I normally spay a pyometra, but there is a desire to preserve whatever small chance there is for this bitch

RE: Large closed pyo chances of pregnancy in future?
I use Alizin quite regularly, think it's more common to use in Germany than GB.
I do think for 'well' bitches with a pyo, it would be cheaper to give alizin then spay in anoestrus than a 'pyo op'. (Although whether an open pyo should routinely cost so much more than a bitch spay is another conversation.)

RE: Large closed pyo chances of pregnancy in future?

I use Alizin quite regularly, think it's more common to use in Germany than GB. Often used to initially stabilize and then spay as well. Generally good experience with, protocol I'm using is antibiotics, alizin 10mg/kg on d1, 2 and 8. Other meds depending on clinical situation.

Haven't had a lot of feedback from breeders but pretty much all of them seem to prefer it over spaying, therefore assume relevant number of them will be in pup again but might be wrong.

RE: Large closed pyo chances of pregnancy in future?
detect free-abdominal fluid suggestive of peritonitis at any point.
I put it on a drip and gave synulox, maropitant and 10mg/kg alizin SC yesterday. Going to repeat this today.. I find the plethora of alizin protocol studies confusing. I'll try to chart any changes with ultrasound and upload them later for the forums interest. I have permission to spay if detect free-abdominal fluid suggestive of peritonitis at any point.

I'd put the chances of the bitch having pups in the future at between 0% and 10% (more generous than my colleagues!), but we don't generally have any breeder clients so we have book knowledge only. My logic was that it had not had pups yet despite AI and natural matings and it was hard to imagine a high future chance, but your experience suggests I may have been a bit pessimistic - it is only 3.5 years old - glad I asked!

I'll feel more comfortable if the cervix opens and all that yucky fluid comes out.

RE: Large closed pyo chances of pregnancy in future?

We see quite a few and we treat them all the same, open or closed. If they are closed though we tend to hospitalise them for a few days on IV fluids when we start Alizin.

I don't know if the amount of puss (or whatever we call that intrauterine fluid) makes any difference, we saw large pyos getting pregnant and small pyos not getting pregnant. I would say most females get pregnant if mated next season but not all. And I wouldn't treat a pyo twice.

We use a modified protocol with a couple of differences. If there is no significant reduction in uterine horn diameter by the third inj then I add prostaglandines and I sometimes add a day 11 inj. of Alizin.
