How many cases are you seeing and how much surgery is being done in general practice vs referral?

Thankfully most of our brachys are getting old with no influx of new pups. Haven't seen a puppy Pug in over 4 years and an English Bulldog pup in even longer. I think people are finally wising up in our part of the woods. Even Frenchie pups seem to be a thing of the past. Just get the very odd referral from another practice (we're a 1st opinion practice), when actual referral is cost prohibitive. Definitely something we wouldn't refer as a 1st opinion practice. Do nose, soft palate and saccules as necessary. I think electrocautery is your friend with this surgery.

RE: BOAS Surgeries in house

Saccules are almost always secondary to everything else. It’s rare as hens teeth to not need to do nares and SP. Can’t think of a case just needing nares. I have never done saccules and they carry the greatest risk of post op bleeds.

one note of caution - assess the larynx. If it’s collapsed in any way don’t touch them, you won’t solve a thing and they need a perm tracheostomy.

RE: BOAS Surgeries in house

Any combination those, though generally I'll do those plus tonsils. Thanks for the feedback-very useful and good to hear that maybe things are changing for the better. Just in case anyone is interested, the BOAS course we are running has been developed with Cambridge Vet School team- lots of discussion around surgical cases..some of the funds go directly back to their research..just putting it out there!
