I was wondering if I could get some advice on the lesion shown in the pictures attached. The patient is a 14 year old Shih Tzu that was in today to have its last 3 teeth removed.

The gum in the place of where 108 should be was quite red

RE: Canine carnassial (108) - unusual lesion
Following the procedure I was reviewing the dogs history as he had come from another vets and that tooth was marked as having been extracted in 2018
That sounds weird, but sometimes its best to not fret about what may or may not have been done in 2018 but treat what you've got now.

I really think from the pictures I'd be doing something on the lines I suggested. If there's a money problem , I'd do it cheap or free. I can see that might be a problem if you're not the boss and the boss is a tightwad.

RE: Canine carnassial (108) - unusual lesion

I can see if can get the actual images and post them here, it was just on the fly on the way to something else after the procedure. This was a very financially limited case and so we took out the remaining teeth that were there (probably at a loss!) and as I was uncertain about this I decided I would seek advice and then provide the owner with the option of following up based on that advice.

If you could let us have the actual radiographs it could be helpful.

However I think your interpretation is probably correct. The tooth has been resorbing and what's left of it is buried in granulation tissue.

As it's all clearly so inflamed, I think probably I would have opened it up, removed all detectable hard tissue and maybe some granulation tissue too and sutured it closed with a flap as nicely as possible. What did you do? I'm not asking in order to criticise, I'm interested.
