I got hot under the collar when a client told me that the dog had regular 'professional' tooth cleaning. I went through the law etc expecting this to be someone using an ebay

RE: Sonic toothbrushing!

I thought the original question was about this Emmi-Pet thing being sold for owners to use at home. No objection to that if they want to splash their cash, and maybe the amount they've spent – or the novelty value – will encourage an owner to actually do the brushing and keep it up regularly. They still need to be shown how to do it, or they will continue to miss the bits they always miss, just missing them with super sonic efficiency.

But a dog groomer doing it and calling it "regular professional tooth cleaning" –

The object of tooth brushing is to keep removing and stirring up plaque so that it never gets a chance to accumulate and "mature" subgingivally. It needs to be done regularly and frequently. You can get away with not doing it every day (though a strict daily routine has advantages) but it needs to be say 3 times a week – once a week is not enough.

All the dog gromer's "professional" cleaning will achieve is a somewhat short-lived cosmetic effect. Discouragement of calculus formation is no more than a cosmetic matter. Sure, have a bit of cosmetic attention, but don't let the grromer kid you it's of the slightest benefit to oral health.

Unless maybe the groomer is calling in every day to do it?
