I’ve managed without it in all those situations. I could see it for cordeal defects. Never convinced for open wounds. Never missed it for maxillectomy. I used it occasionally for abdominal or thoracic wall reconstruction years ago but mostly now rely on muscle flaps.

Tissue replacement, as it were, wherever needed. The most obvious example being as a first layer when doing the repair after a maxillectomy – quicker healing and much less soreness during the healing.

I've also used it, for instance, in repairing a jugular vein or a carotid artery; also, as the manufactutrers suggested, in huge skin defects that we planned to heal by granulation; in the skin defects it was OK, but a bit of a faff keeping it moist and I'm not sure it was really worth the effort. Other than for the skin, I thought it was versatile and jolly useful in situations where it was indicated.

I've now discovered that the SIS material is still made for human use, and in various forms that are improvements on the original. I hope they will sell some to me. I don't know the price yet...

What do you use them for? I was an advisor when the product was first launched but always felt the market eas smaller than they hoped
