I was hoping for some advice/opinion.

I have a bitch who is 7 days post partum, and she has developed a mucopurulent vulva discharge which had neutrophils and bacteria on in house cytology. I've sent a swab for C+S, but I popped a scanner

RE: Retained Placenta in a Bitch
We don't pull retained membranes in cows,
Wot no cleansings?

Times have changed. How do you fill your day?

RE: Retained Placenta in a Bitch

I'd describe that as a normal 'lochial' discharge. We know bovine uterus only expresses oxytocin receptors for a day or two around parturition so I wouldn't bother with oxytocin. We don't pull retained membranes in cows, I'd be very confident that if the bitch is well then she will either pass or absorb whatever is in there. Some vaginal discharge for 2-3 weeks is normal.

RE: Retained Placenta in a Bitch

Always remember:

1. Bitches eat placentae

2. Pups sometimes share one ( I think...!)I

3. Clients usually aren't entirely sure what is actually placenta

I have never seen a case of retained placenta in a bitch ( lots of manual helpings over 30 years)

RE: Retained Placenta in a Bitch

Thank you, it's reassuring to know I'm not way off track! :-)

RE: Retained Placenta in a Bitch

Given the dog is clinically well I think I would give oxytocin in the first instance and monitor the response. If she becomes unwell, pyrexic, or the discharge becomes more and odourous, or the C&S results indicate it I would then add in antibiotics.
