No court in the land is going to go against a reasonable clinical choice made by a veterinary surgeon.

At present the pharmaceutical industry is letting the profession down very badly. Vaccines being imported from overseas because UK companies cannot supply them. Fluid therapy medication unavailable. Medication out of stock etc etc.

If you feel a particular medication is most suitable discuss it with the owner, get their OK and go for it. Go daft and head into the wildly exotic choices and be ready to justify yourselves.

RE: Ringworm treatment in guinea pigs
From the gov.uk guidance on cascade The cascade: prescribing unauthorised medicines - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

"Exemptions for small pet animals

Medicines marketed under the exemption for small pet animals are available over the counter and may be used in accordance with the product’s labelling. If you need to use one of these products not in accordance with its recommended use, this would be classed as use under the cascade and considered an extemporaneous preparation."
Also says; "They can legally be prescribed, supplied and used under the last step of the cascade."

So following the cascade for the example in the OP, Imaverol, Itrafungol and Malaseb as they are licensed for that condition in another species.

Prescribe the product that you feel is best suited to treating the condition. I defy anyone to take action when a choice is reasonable, even if the product used is human.
