She's been lethargic, pyrexic and had a purulent vaginal discharge for 4/5 days by now. Ultrasound has confirmed it. He's been in touch with vets in his local area that are treating her

RE: Pyometra treatment
How successful is the treatment? how many go on to breed again?
I haven't got proper statistics. The original paper looking into a modified alizin protocol said 96% cure rate but an increased risk getting it back next season.

From the ones I've dine I can remember only one that didn't get cleared and then was operated and I had one breeding bitch that took 3 attempts and me getting to the point telling the breeder we'll have to neuter if this attempt doesn't work.

It gets used much more commonly in Germany, sometimes only to do initial stabilisation and neuter once better.

Wouldn't treat only with abs even if open but have done quite a few with abs and alizin +/- nsaid.

The protocol I'm using is from above mentioned study (Wehrend et al, I think): 2x alizin 24h apart and a 3rd after 7 days, abs cover at least those 7 days.

RE: Pyometra treatment

quite good, need to breed at next oestrus.
We did not run an internal audit and I honestly don't have a number but since we use this modified protocol I would say that most get to reproduce again, A subjective estimate would be three quarters.

If they're sick I would hospitalise to stabilise first prior to surgery. If they're reasonably well within the next 48 hours ideally.

The last one I had was very unwell, but the owners refused to take it to the OOH provider both pre and post surgery because of costs. It presented mid afternoon, toxic and pyrexic, so started fluids and medications, home overnight, back next day for surgery. Did very well, but I would have been happier if had been cared for OOH instead of going home. But thats's the way of it.

RE: Pyometra treatment
We treat quite a few every year but only because their owners would like to breed from them in the future.
