These are not traditional drugs (yet) and are still quite new. I would use any new drug with care in any patient without checking on compatability.

Steven Odell, the dog is booked in tomorrow night at 4.50 for both injections. If no one knew a great contraindication I was just going to do it. Honestly I'm more of a cow vet and I've used Cytopoint many half a dozen patients and Librela twice. Didn't know if any specific issues with the monoclonal antibody treatments, as they are new (to me, anyway) and checking I wasn't missing anything obvious.

Absolutely agree with the poly pharmacy argument!

RE: Librela & Cytopoint at same time

Got to agree with this query.

In this thread everyone is worrying and fretting about injecting two drugs, made by the same company, into one animal on the same day, both of which have few or negligible side effects or contraindications . However, we don't seem to bat an eyelid at giving heart medication, NSAIDs for OA, the annual vaccines and the random nutraceutical etc etc to the same (usually old and decrepit) animal on the same day, all made by different companies and with multiple contraindications and warnings, by oral and injectable routes, without diving for the compendium. Surely common sense and standard prudence should prevail, and the test of "that seems a reasonable thing to do" should win the day?

Or am I being too pragmatic!!!!

RE: Librela & Cytopoint at same time

Thanks guys

Thank you for contacting Zoetis.

Librela and Cytopoint can be used in the same patient at the same time. If giving at the same time, we advise to give them at different locations as a precaution, that way if there is an injection site reaction, it would be possible to know which product was related to the reaction.

I hope that helps,

Kind regards,

If the latter, if raises a general question. Many patients are multiple drugs at the same time, and how many of them have undergone specific trials, and are specifically licenced for such combinations? If not what purpose does the cascade legislation serve?

RE: Librela & Cytopoint at same time

No

The Librela data sheet states

"Do not mix with any other veterinary medicinal product" I don't know whether that means giving at the same time, or mixing in the same syringe?

and

"No other laboratory studies on the safety of concomitant administration of this veterinary medicinal product with other veterinary medicinal products have been conducted. No interactions were observed in field studies where this veterinary medicinal product was administered concomitantly with veterinary medicinal products containing parasiticides, antimicrobials, topical antiseptics with or without corticosteroids, antihistamines and vaccines."

Given the work has not been done to say it is just as safe or efficaious, it would surely be prudent not too?

I think I would advise 2 week gaps between each, and discuss it with the client pointing out the 2 could be given together, but that I couldn't guarantee safety or efficacy.
