My dog ( of course), 8 year old rescue labrador. She had the arthroscopies last November. Before the procedure I had felt a small solid area in her lateral joint capsule

RE: Mineralisation of soft tissues

Sorry , I maybe did not word my question correctly. I wasn’t implying that I thought this was to do with the arthroscopy, just that she maybe has some strange disease process that causes mineralisation of her soft tissues ( as pre arthroscopy she had the thickening of her joint capsule). It was carried out by a specialist with lots of experience in whom I have total confidence. The above radiographs are from March 21. She has had 2 arthrocentesis with negative cultures and only mononuclear cells. I did a 3rd in house one this week, again no neutrophilia. I do have orthagonal views as well. Thank you for your help.

RE: Mineralisation of soft tissues

RE: Mineralisation of soft tissues

Hi Alison, these are a sorry looking pair of elbows. I hope your dog is coping better than the state of the elbows would suggest they might be. To answer your question, arthroscopy should not cause such a change, and I haven’t knowingly seen such acceleration due to arthroscopy. In the radiographs posted I would say that the changes are very generalised and not overtly limited to the arthroscopy sites. Without seeing ‘before’ images I don’t know how much change there has been but if there has been rapid change then consider whether the acceleration may be due to more than just ‘OA’. For example, if there was a chronic low-grade sepsis present, or elbow instability, acceleration of changes would be expected. Another possibility, and I write this nervously not knowing anything about your dog or who did the surgery, is that the joints were damaged quite badly at the time of surgery by an inexperienced surgeon. In the right hands arthroscopy is minimally invasive and very safe but it has a long learning curve and I have seen nasty iatrogenic injuries after poor arthroscopies.

Just some thoughts, hope they help.
